Feb 22, Erin rated it really liked it. Ok, so there were chunks of this book that I skimmed through and did not thoroughly read. There is my confession. I also have to confess that the author was a teacher of mine when I was in graduate school. Now that the full disclosure of information is complete, I will say that it is a book well worth reading by artists, spiritually minded people and anyone with an interest in saving the world.
The entire text gives solid, usable suggestions for connecting to forces outside of ourselves and appr Ok, so there were chunks of this book that I skimmed through and did not thoroughly read. The reason that I skimmed parts of the book is that I was just more interested in the author's ideas and experience with art than her descriptions of other people's art process. But I think many people would benefit from reading those vignettes. I may go back to it at some point.

First of all, I enjoyed it and got some inspiration regarding where I would like to go with a career after graduate school. I had visions of creating a "therapeutic" art studio in one of the old Pawtucket mill buildings. The part I had trouble with is that I think sometimes if not almost always art therapists have a reputation for being a little weird, for lack of a better word.
By weird, I mean, something along the lines of overly new-agey and air-head I had somewhat mixed feelings about this. By weird, I mean, something along the lines of overly new-agey and air-heady. It could easily be argued that this book feeds into that stereotype. It was a little too much peace and love for me and not quite enough scientific-mindedness, which the art therapy field often but not always lacks. Overall, a useful read. Allen, continues to inspire me. I loved it and delighted in it when I first read it and I'll take it off the shelf and open it almost anywhere to become excited again at the wonder that artmaking is, the heart expansion and connection that it is.

Classical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as "a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God". Jihad is a religious duty of Muslims. There are two commonly accepted meanings of jihad: Buddhist practices are known as Bhavana , which literally means "development" or "cultivating"  or "producing"   in the sense of "calling into existence.
When used on its own bhavana signifies 'spiritual cultivation' generally.
Various Buddhist Paths to liberation developed throughout the ages. Hinduism has no traditional ecclesiastical order, no centralized religious authorities, no governing body, no prophet s nor any binding holy book; Hindus can choose to be polytheistic, pantheistic, monistic, or atheistic.
It defines spiritual practice as one's journey towards moksha , awareness of self, the discovery of higher truths, true nature of reality, and a consciousness that is liberated and content. These four paths of spirituality are also known in Hinduism outside India, such as in Balinese Hinduism , where it is called Catur Marga literally: Different schools of Hinduism encourage different spiritual practices. It involves initiation into the school, undergoing rituals, and achieving moksha liberation by experiencing union of cosmic polarities. Sikhism considers spiritual life and secular life to be intertwined: According to Guru Nanak , the goal is to attain the "attendant balance of separation-fusion, self-other, action-inaction, attachment-detachment, in the course of daily life",  the polar opposite to a self-centered existence.
In Sikhism there is no dogma ,  priests , monastics or yogis. In some African contexts, [ which? There is also some suggestion that the benefits associated with spirituality and religiosity might arise from being a member of a close-knit community.
