Hope there's not a quiz at the end! Learn how to choose your fly line and look after it here First of all the length, this depends on the weather, type of water, and your target fish. If the conditions are windy or you are fishing in very small streams or brooks, you will be casting short, so go with a short leader for better turnover 9 - 12ft. In large Stillwater's, this normally requires longer leaders of 9 - 24 ft. The best types of leader are tapered to a fine point, helping to cast better.
If you make your own leader, or purchase ready made ones, the strength is important. Nylon is rated by its breaking strain b. The bigger breaking strains are for targeting the larger fish, whilst the smaller breaking strains are better where stealth is required when targeting smaller species. Now I need to know which fly reel to use to balance my set up!

There were multiple types and weights of line used, a case full of flies ranging in size from a pinky nail to finger-length , gel to coat and waterproof the fly, tools and cutters for knot-tying and knot-untangling, not to mention waders, vests, and other clothing essentials. Grab a pole, some line, and some flies, throw it in the water, and see what happens.

Fly fishing gets its name from the bait that is used: This is why fly fishermen are often amateur ichthyologists fish scientists and entomologists insect scientists. They know types of fish, what those fish eat in what season, what the bugs look like at different times of the year, etc. Check out this guide to not only that knot, but a handful of others used in fly fishing as well. A great closeup of a homemade fly.
You can see the colored thread carefully wrapped about the hook, with feathers and hairs attached to create that bug-like look.

Flies truly are works of art, created with various materials like beads, foams, animal hairs, and much more. The beginner angler will not be fly tying; there are literally books written on the craft, and it requires a whole other set of tools and skills. The GIF above is from an Orvis instructional video.
They have dozens of fly fishing videos for you to peruse. For this article, I actually researched the viability of putting together an illustrated guide on casting. But when I saw other guides that were out there and folks trying to describe it, I actually got more confused than when I was with my guide and trying it out with a rod in hand.
There are too many types of casting, too many subtle motions and arm movements, and too many ways to make mistakes for me to try to relate that all to you here on a website. The same goes for hooking and ultimately catching the fish. This video shows you the overhead cast, however in this video he uses a more sideways motion, which is fine. Just an example of the many different variations of the basic overhead cast. The concepts are the same. The best place to practice is either in open water or in a cut field of grass. We definitely recommend practicing for a while before heading out to actually begin fishing.
There will often be other fly fishers there that will share their favorite spots too. You can also join local clubs, and Facebook has a number of fly fishing groups where you can learn about great fishing spots in various areas. Everyone has their own personal favorite spot, and part of the fly fishing journey is finding yours. Of course there is far more to learn: But you have the basics. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. I have always wanted to try fly fishing.
Fly Fishing for Beginners – A Complete Guide
I appreciate the tips you have here for beginners like me! I had no idea that it was best to buy the fly rods and reels together, but what you said makes sense. I would like to get a matching set! I have a basic class for beginners coming up and would like to copy your materials for a hand out at the end of the class.

I can show and explain until I am blue in the face, but if I have something to send back with the them I may be able to get a few on the water. Big big noob here. I actually have been wanting to learn how to fly fish so I went and purchased a Pfluger fly fishing kit.
I received it today, and basically put it together and fed the prespooled line through the guides and tied on the tapered leader….. To my surprise I pulled in 2 fish, not monsters of course and not even baby monsters lol but fun either way. First was a whopping 3 in perch and the other a solid 5 in bass….
