Please try again later. This book is okay but contains a lot of information regarding Pitts family genealogy that is not of much interest - especially when later in the book we don't learn a lot about what happened to Pitts siblings. The book also contained numerous errors and needed a better editor.
MGM fed casting rumors when it was Selznick. In my extensive reading on GWTW for over 45 years, I never recall Pitts being mentioned seriously as one of the contenders for Scarlett. The sentence "Utilizing the right makeup and wardrobe, Zasu was as lovely as any actress in contention for the role of Scarlett O'Hara" is a bit far-fetched since Pitts at age 45 would have been a bit old to play year old Scarlett.. The book also contained many misspellings as in kneed for knead, Ann Blythe for Ann Blyth, and on page Monty Woolley is referred to as both Wooley and Woolley.

I also felt that the author spent too much time on Pitts conservative Republican views. It was interesting how it was brought out many times that Pitts did not agree with FDR's New Deal policies but then on page made mention that if Pitts hadn't shaved some years off her age she could have been collecting Social Security. The book gave us hints throughout as to what her children and grandchildren are doing now but it would have been nice to have this at the end as a closure and no mention is made of what happened to her worthless second husband to whom she was married for 30 years.
Overall, the book seemed well researched with a good filmography in the back but the errors and misspellings were distracting and made you lose confidence in the author's work. This book is written as a loving tribute and as such, contains genealogical information about ZaSu Pitts' ancestors that isn't really of interest to the reader.
It is also a bit of a whitewashing, as the author feels it necessary to apologize for ZaSu's conservative politics, I also feel the author makes too much of ZaSu being a Catholic, or as one who lived a life with strong Christian conviction as this is merely the author speculating. Finally; the fact that the author compares the attractive Ms.

Pitts to Britain's flavor-of-the-month Susan Boyle, is something that is beyond ridiculous. One thing this book has is a lot of research, and in fact, too much research to the point of some of the information being useless to the casual reader. As another review mentioned, this is one lengthy text badly in need of some editing and it is presented as almost a "rough draft", dare I say. If the author did not inject her own personal opinion so often and simply presented relevant facts to ZaSu's life as a legendary Hollywood character actress, this would have been a far better book, and as such, a definitive book on this highly underrated actress has yet to be written.
I pretty much agree with the other person who left a 3 star rating. It's OK but not great.

She didn't have a particularly stellar career and it's almost as if she was more a stage star than of the screen. Definitely a character actress. I do think there was more family information than necessary because she didn't have a strong relationship with her family.
I had always heard about her and Barbara LaMarr and the adoption of LaMarr's son, but not a lot is said of it all I don't think. Their tales, of their personal phrases, demonstrate gritty stories of difficult males with tough beginnings who controlled to show their lives round to develop into efficient and ethical Christian electorate.
