Most people--especially readers of literature, criticism, and theory--have come into contact with the tenets of Freudian psychoanalysis either directly or indirectly. For good or ill, most of us know what a Freudian slip is and have heard of the Oedipus complex, of phallic images, and of the division of the psyche into id, ego, and superego. Very few people, however, have actually read Freud. Like Karl Marx, the Viennese psychoanalyst has achieved that paradoxical immortality: Let me make a distinction, though: The concept of "repression" serves as a good example.

Many people seem to think that because neurosis is the result of repression, human beings should yield to any impulse they have, no matter how problematic, in order to avoid "going crazy". This is simply not Freud; it is merely "cheap psychology", and has no foundation whatsoever. This collection is probably the best place to start for those who want to actually read Freud, simply because they show the psychoanalyst at work in concrete cases. As I was reading about Little Hans, the Ratman, and the Wolfman, it occurred to me that in a way I was reading mystery novellas, only the mystery involved the mind of one person.

Something had gone wrong, and a psychoanalyst was trying to figure out what event had been responsible for the neurosis, just like a detective tries to find out who committed the crime. In these cases, Freud allows the reader to enter the mind of a person, so they are not only great as psychoanalytic case studies, but also fascinating as works of literature.

I will comment briefly on the texts included in the collection.

My favorite case study, it involves a rather precocious five-year-old who developed a phobia of horses. It took more than four years to treat him, and "The Wolfman" became one of Freud's most famous cases.

This volume also contains the case histories of a boy's fear of horses and the Ratman's violent fear of rats, as well as the essay "Some Character Types," in which Freud draws on the work of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Nietzsche to demonstrate different kinds of resistance to therapy. Above all, the case histories show us Freud at work, in his own words. Showing best matches Show all copies. What makes Biblio different? Sign In Register Help Cart 0.
