This had some inappropriate poems I did not expect for my elderly grandmother! Had to tear out a whole chapter. My residents are really enjoying hearing these stories and poems out loud. Great collection of poems and short stories that will surely brighten a senior's day, as well as the reader.
Her stories are easily related to and evoke memories. It's a horrible book for seniors if they have any memory issues whatsoever. See all 16 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Have bound volumes of his books also. Don't have them all, but sometimes take one down and read over again. I haven't keep his paperback, which I regret.
With these you can keep paperbacks all together so to speak. Glad his daughter took a interest in publishing his unpublished works. Wish he was still alive and still writing. See all reviews. East Dane Designer Men's Fashion. He found lonely older women of certain financial independence at holiday places and paid them attention, and post marriage gave them a good time until their money ran out. Then it was time to move on. To his chagrin, there was a small matter of having married only eleven times.
Most of his wives were in fact willing to take him back. After his leaving prison, the protagonist received a post card from him one day, and understood he had made his round dozen to his satisfaction after all. The story takes place on a voyage in Pacific where a woman of certain profession is having fun along with a few of males around - after all being alone most of their lives far away from home was tough on the guys, and an accommodating woman who was not merely paid goods but one with some spirit, some heart and joy, was a blessing.
Unfortunately for them there is not merely a usual contingent of the disapproving couples and other respectable members of society but also a preacher very sure and proud of himself, who goes after the woman with denunciation and promised hell fire to all that would consort with her.
She is brought to abject surrender and is entirely dependent on him subsequently in her submission to a pious life henceforth. And the preacher is willing to sacrifice himself, to go to her at any hour of day or night she might need him, as his wife very proudly testifies to his selfless sacrifice of his own comforts.

- Forgotten Gems From The Twilight Zone.
The preacher meanwhile has dreams of hills of Nebraska having read it so long ago I could be wrong about the name of the particular state - and then one day the preacher is found dead, having committed suicide, while there is sound of phonograph and laughter and dancing from the room of the woman who was trying to reform, and a note of bitter victory. She was sincere in her repentance and her attempt to reform, but the high minded preacher all too fallible and unaware of his own Achilles's heel shared with all life, if not more than a little hypocritical in his imposition of his will and his standards of virtue on all and sundry.
And then there is an acquaintance of the writer protagonist really, except one tends to assume he is the writer from colonies in Malaya, a young man who needs to have some company and is introduced to the couple. Some time later, the couple is separated, and the wife is adamant in not returning to the husband, and he commits suicide. The protagonist is called to interpret a letter from the young man in Malaya who has now returned, and informed that he is responsible for the love that the young man and the not so young wife now widow fell into since he introduced them.
The letter is cautious and sympathetic about her loss but equivocal about her prospects of being able to come to Malaya to marry him. The hostess, a friend of the protagonist makes the observation that it is up to him to make the young man realise his responsibility having gone into the love affair and caused the separation, which is when it becomes clear that the wife in love with another man had never crossed her limits being a virtuous woman. And while to some pompous hypocrites it would be an opportunity to gasp and act shocked, today the reality of that statement is only too obvious, what with "the lack of commitment" of males being so huge a problem in US.
May 10, Katelyn rated it really liked it. I've determined to read all of Maugham's short stories because I love them, however, I may now need to take a break from his style so I can appreciate him more later. I love his settings and characters, though when reading one story and another after another, you tend to see his repeating phrases when he describes someone physically how many times have I read "She must have been a great beauty when she was younger", 7 times? He sometimes opens a story with a somewhat random philosophical I've determined to read all of Maugham's short stories because I love them, however, I may now need to take a break from his style so I can appreciate him more later.
He sometimes opens a story with a somewhat random philosophical observation his love for a good cigar, his love of travel and he always provides a full account of the main characters connections - how he knows them, what he has heard of them, who their friends are, what their position is. It's the old English style, I suppose. I love him, I can't wait to read his last volumes of short stories, but I do need a break now.
Apr 28, Fiona rated it did not like it Shelves: I haven't read Somerset Maugham before and after reading four or five short stories, I never want to read his work again. Somerset Maugham has nothing kind or positive to say about humanity; his short stories present isolation, misery, cruelty and hopelessness without balance or meaning.
The stories which I read deal entirely with the misfortunes of characters beyond any chance of redemption or hope of finding life fulfilment. Having understood him to be a famous and thus relativel Did not finish. Having understood him to be a famous and thus relatively skilful writer, I was sharply disappointed. His depressing stories left a bad taste in my mouth. However, if anyone can recommend a story or novel of his worth reading, I'm open to having my mind changed - in part. After finishing this, Maugham has become one of my favorite writers.
This is the best short-story collection I've read.
He builds worlds that are absorbing, entertaining, devastating, and memorable. This collection is made up of what I would call three facets. The anti-heroe is always a man that although lacks a college- trained mind is self taught in selected literature, has a pragmatic view of life in the jungle like siring half castes with the native women. Drinking and dispatching problems in the best possible way. The second one is a gay knowledgable confidant, escort of women of society, namely writers, intellectuals an This collection is made up of what I would call three facets.
This facet enhances the first one for it portrays the latest characters as whimsical, selfish, treacherous, manipulative parasitic creatures with an extremely erratic conduct The Creative Impulse. Men condone their stupidity and this proves fatal for them in most cases The Human Element. The third facet is extremely appealing and unknown to me. With the latter he shows an affinity with the detached observer tool and proves himself ruthless with the pathos of his characters The man with the scar.
This left me at the beginning with a certain uneasy feeling I have to admit. As for rash, conceited men that take everything for granted Maugham provides humorous epiphanys very much in the vein of a Chekhov The Colonel's lady or of a Roald Dahl in "Tales of the Unexpected" The Round Dozen.
- The Silver Vortex (Guardians of the Tall Stones Book 4);
- Project Mendel.
Although predictable enough in their midpoint, Maugham proves to be really good at spinning yarns and pleasantly witty. He makes the reader giggle plenty of times although the story's outcome is obvious enough The round dozen to name one. I don't give it five stars because the same scenarios are repeated several times throughout this volume. Jul 25, Robert Palmer rated it it was amazing. Reading any of Maughan's short stories is like traveling to another time and place. You can take your time reading ,an hour now,15 minutes at another time.
Some stories are very short, some much longer. It would be difficult to pick a favorite but if I had to it would be the " the verger" a mere six pages as a Verger in the Church of England is let go from his job of seventeen years because it is found out by the new Vicar that can not read or write.
Collected Short Stories: Volume 2
This story has a very amusing ending. Other of Reading any of Maughan's short stories is like traveling to another time and place. Other of the stories have a sad or a very surprising ending and always a different look at life. The setting of the stories is all over the world, a French penal colony, a south sea island,China,London and even the USA. Maughan did much traveling and wrote his novels and short stories all over the world. Jun 12, Shruty Sikhamani rated it really liked it.
He may be the hero or he may be an onlooker or a confidant. But he is a character.
