Writing Bestselling Children's Books: 52 brilliant ideas for inspiring young ...

I found the insights, tips and exercises extremely valuable. There is a lot more depth to this book than just '52 ideas' - there is a lot of very practical and helpful advice that can be immediately put to use. Many sections of the book will also be helpful to me as reference after the first draft of my own novel is completed - a great resource to come back to time and time again, thank you. One odd point and this was no reason to demote the 5-star rating or for you to avoid purchasing the book is that the editing is sloppy in places unfinished sentences; words out of place eg 'CARL JUNG children's magazines'?

I certainly picked up a few extra things to look out for, even though this is not the only book I've read on the subject! After downloading dozens and dozens of advice books on all different topics, I have grown especially wary of books with numbers in their titles, which often consist of collections of vaguely related, unedited blog posts full of spelling, syntax and logic errors.

Despite the number 52 in the subtitle, this book brims with signs of creativity and careful planning. Even the table of contents provides inspiration. Instead of a simple clickable list, the TOC has chapter titles accompanied by full-sentence, paraphrased summaries of the contents.

Thus, one way to fight writer's block is to browse the TOC and click on promising topics to fire up your imagination. Each chapter consists of the following "brilliant features": This description sounds a bit cut-and-dry, but the execution of this idea is top notch. Here is a sample from chapter 7, "Too many E numbers" "Kids are psychic -- they can always tell when grown-ups are bored. Some people think that writing for kids is easy — short books, no big words, non-existent attention spans and then fill in any gaps with pictures.

All About Writing in First Person

And being restricted by theme, vocabulary, length and a wandering attention span makes things infinitely more complicated. But creating books for children is also one of the most rewarding activities any writer can experience. To kids, stories are everything — they fuel their imaginations and provide endless hours of entertainment. Despite the number 52 in the subtitle, this book brims with signs of creativity and careful planning. Even the table of contents provides inspiration. Instead of a simple clickable list, the TOC has chapter titles accompanied by full-sentence, paraphrased summaries of the contents.

Reading such product labels is akin to reading badly-written children's books: For maximum effectiveness, perhaps the author should include American English glosses or paraphrases. This book is a gem for anyone intending to write a children's book. I keep this book close by as I write my own children's books. The many fresh ideas are quickly referenced because of the clean layout design inside. On every page are practical tips, quotes from well known writers and an encouraging voice from the author himself, Alexander Gordon Smith.

Writing Bestselling Children's Books

I find his writing style very easy to digest. Many of the ideas and exercises are ones that I would have never thought of and I have found them to be very helpful! This book was a nice reminder if you are switching genres from more serious subjects back to writing for children. Never underestimate what children think and how they perceive the world when you write.
