Please try again later. I have a certificate in permaculture from the Regenerative Design Institute in Bolinas, CA, and am in the very beginning stages of getting a farm going in Oregon. This wonderful book holds an excellent overview of permaculture principles - a great review - then goes on to present details about how they are applied at Three Sisters Farm. In addition to straight permaculture, the authors interweave ecoscience from more mainstream sources, to excellent effect. Even more special is the thorough presentation of the bioshelter concept, their design, their use of their bioshelter, and - thank you!
Following the Three Sisters bioshelter are case studies of the structures from other farms. The book is both very well organized and very well written.
It is a treasure, and is going to be a mainstay for me as I lay out the garden and aquaponic areas of my farm. I unreservedly recommend this book. It has wide scope but presents it in a manner that is imminently practical.

Can't say enough good things about the book. Those of us in different climates can read, understand, and adjust as needed I have read heaps of books on farming and gardening, and I was surprised by how excellent this book is. Many books are primers on ideas in modern ecological farming and gardening. This book is not a beginner book on vague permaculture design ideas. It's a very thorough book with case studies of actual projects, showing you how to design, build and run these systems, including the pieces of the bioshelter puzzle ie- keeping chickens, aquaculture, compost in the bioshelter. It IS light enough reading though that it provides great inspiration for aspiring gardeners.
It's very practical and he goes into a superb amount of detail on everything, even what kind of lights and fixtures to use. This is really a book to get if you actually plan to employ some of these ideas. He includes calculations of how to determine how to provide sufficient heat in a greenhouse year round with minimal supplemental heating, how to determine BTUs from compost, etc. Our original habitat, the savannah, gave us access to the resources of the grassland and the fruits and shelter of the forest. The permaculture landscape can mimic the savannah, providing us with a mix of trees, shrubs, pastures and cropland to forage and tend.
When spring peepers sing their spring song, it is time to prepare the beds to plant peas, spinach and onions.
Bioshelter Market Garden: A Permaculture Farm
We try to be sensitive to the spring fluctuations and cycles of the place. We are trying to develop the native language that is lost to many modern farmers. Eventually the need to 'design' is superseded by a cultural knowledge of the land and resources. We must begin somewhere. Humility as to our own ignorance of nature's complexity will lead to the true permaculture farm.
As a new traditional wisdom replaces design, we can find our way back to a deep knowing of the place as Indigenous cultures. The interweaving of the gardener's spirit, the soil's fertility, and the garden's unique characteristics manifests as a new tapestry each year. A garden landscape often tells the tale of a gardener's journey. Stewardship begins in our yards and gardens, and it extends to the choices we make in what we consume. My childhood memories of walking the nearly dry bed of Glade Run, picking mulberries and raspberries while the hummingbirds and honeybees foraged the orange blossoms of the jewelweed, is also a vision I have for urban children today.
Parks, garden lots and other green spaces in a permanent culture will provide wild places for children drawn to foraging—place where they can endure thorn-scratched arms and legs and purple-stained fingers and lips in exchange for eating their fill of abundant blackberries. We must begin to forge a new myth that allows humans to be redeemed in the eyes of creation or manifest universe, as you will and regain our place in the garden of our own design.
Feb 25, Katie rated it really liked it Shelves: My only complaint is that I think I would restructure the book a bit. Some of it just didn't make sense until later in the book when another piece fit into place. I might also include some more diagrams, charts and pictures that better illustrate the points being made.

It really looks good, doesn't it Thank you and I just requested it by inter-library loan. My tax dollars at work!!! I'm interested to see how the methods differ from those of "Solviva," if they do. I read it earlier this year, and didn't find too much of use to me. That way, if you decide that you want your own copy later, you know that you won't have wasted your money.
