The world of the Call of the Sword is still very much in a pre industrial period, stories of ancient battles are far enough in the past though, that people considered them legends. But are they legends, children's stories, simple allegories? Or are they in fact precise eye witness accounts of great armies, great beasts and god-like beings both good and evil?
Roger Taylor (author)
Have they ignored the history that their great ancestors recorded and participated in? But when legend begins to materialize into Orthulundy's reality, the country will have to stand up and be counted in a conflict that has spanned the eons, a conflict its people and the people of its neighbour states will become fully reacquainted with. Call of the sword is the first in a long series of books set in a wonderfully fleshed out, and totally complete saga. I'd recommend this to any and all fantasy enthusiasts.
I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I will definitely read more books in this series. I bought this book because of the price and because I thought it looked like a wonderful start to a fantasy series, and I was not disappointed. The story moves along quickly, the characters are interesting and well developed, and it is what I consider to be a true "epic" fantasy a quest, good vs.
For the price, check this book out, if you like it, there are lots more books in the series. I purchased this series 4 books constitute the original "Chronicles of Hawklan" not long after it was originally written, and I devoured them. I waited impatiently for each successive publication and lamented the closure brought by the "Return of the Sword.
The world is well realized and the characters well developed. The stories are deliberately paced, which, in our impatient and short-attention span world, may be seen as a weakness, yet is, in my opinion, one their greatest strengths. Although the original four books will no doubt be seen as derivative in the flooded "fantasy" market, they were written well before most of the popular fair available today; moreover, each of the following stand-alone stories that exist in the fuller world of Hawklan linked subtly to these first books show that although there are fantastic elements, they are just plain good books.
I read the complete series of Chronicles of Hawklan a number of years ago. I couldn't put them down. I read one after the other. All of the books were excellent, with the exception of Whistler. For some reason, I struggled with that one. But all the rest were a very good read.
Interesting characters and plot - a lot of action.

It is an epic story that I thoroughly enjoyed and was sad when I read the last book. This series would make a great set of movies if you are a LOTR fan, you will enjoy these books! One night in the middle of a snowstorm, Hawklan arrives at the ancient sealed castle of Anderras Darion. He has no memory of his personal history or even his name. The locals of the village below the castle re-name him Hawklan and he finds he is a natural healer of great ability with a store of knowledge that he doesn't know the origins of.
The real story of this book starts with the arrival of a harmless looking tinker who sells goods to the village people.

I agree, a read that left me in the light though traveling on the darker edge of what is in us all. A great series for all ages.

This is the second book in the Hawklan series and follows on from "the call of the sword". Hawklan finds that he has to go against his healers instincts and offer violence to help rescue her. He also finds that he has an unexpected ability for violence and that he is, unknown to himself, an expert swordsman and military field commander. The rescue of Tirilen leads Hawklan and his friends to finally realise that things outside Orthlund are much worse than they ever imagined and that the peaceful land of Fyorlund across the mountains has been slowly corrupted in their lifetime and they must investigate or find themselves overwhelmed in the second coming of the evil Sumeral.
This book is a well written and enjoyable continuation from the events in the first book of this series. It could be read alone, but the real benefit comes with reading it directly after the first book. These are a well thought out fantasy series that has no pretensions to being another "lord of the rings" but is still a very enjoyable read for those who love this genre by this lesser known British author.
