Joe Stirling set an inspiring example of the creed to"always do the right things," People all around him have benefited from his wisdom and leadership. His parents would be so proud of him. Joe's life is lovingly documented in this incredibly well written account of his early life in pre-Nazi Germany to his rise to the top of the business and philanthropic community in Norwich.

It's facinating to get a first hand account of how Joe's friends and neighbors became increasingly hostile to him and other Jews as Hitler solidified his power some agreed with the Nazi ideology, others did so out of fear. Joe's business acumen and kindness had a substantial impact on so many within his community through his thriving travel agency and his participation in then Lions.

It just goes to show how one person can make a huge difference and how much potential was lost in the senseless brutality of the Holocaust. One person found this helpful. As an avid reader of world war II, this book helped "flesh out" questions I had concerning Jews who did escape the horrors of Hitler. Anyone who reads this book should come away with a feeling of genuine relief that this man continued his life in such an optimistic manner and was able to talk to groups about his experiences. I have always been interested in the bravery of the German Jews who lived through that kind of hatred and prejudice!!

His life is truly an inspiring tale of events that shaped his beliefs, and made him a very strong man! I think God's providential hand was on him his entire life!

An emotional story about a time in the past that should never have occurred. Gunter Stern was an amazing person. I feel privileged to have read his story. Interesting but not what you think.

Covers the man's life until Only a small part of the book deals with his escape from Hitler. Still not a bad book. This is a great story of survival and perseverance. I gave it 4 stars because some parts were too long with unnecessary details. I was also familiar with on town whose description was not quite correct.

Very interesting story about life before and after WWII and how one person can create a very positive life in spite of tremendous obstacles.

If not at the very pointy edge of the spear, they were somewhere on the cutting edge, as the American army advanced into Germany. It was a bittersweet come-coming, though.

46 Powerful and Moving Books About the Holocaust

Only one of the six ever returned to Europe for good and all. Overall, a very readable, page-turning account. Lo and behold, when I looked at the list of the Ritchie Boys in the appendix at the end of the book I saw my father's name there. He had never talked much about his experiences during the war and certainly never told us that he was a Ritchie Boy. It was wonderful to learn this information even if it was so long after WWII. This is a well written book about an important topic. I couldn't put it down. Henderson for telling this story! While he spoke of the rigorous training they were put through at Camp Ritchie, which is vividly described here, he did not speak much of his time back in Europe.

This book helped fill in the gaps of my family's understanding of some of what his experiences overseas must have been like. Henderson will always have our gratitude. If that was the only reason for someone to read it, it would not deserve five stars from this reader or anyone else, however.

But the skill with which the author has weaved the individual stories of these six men with the large scale momentous events that they were both observers of, and particiapants in, is no small achievement. Both readable and gripping, Mr. Henderson has crafted a book that highlights the contributions of these men to the war effort, the dangers and challenges they faced, all while effectively conveying the Big Picture historical backdrop of the times. Highly recommended for students of WWII, but one I would hope gets a wider readership because it is fundamentally a well-written, compelling read.

On April 13, , American soldiers in central Germany liberated starving internees from Bergen-Belsen crammed onto a sealed train. Lev Raphael's father was on that train. Miller is the story of one of the men of that liberating 30th Infantry Division, a tale of endurance, courage, and love.
