In my younger days I marvelled at a a little winger Brian Honour and when I read his book was to be published.
Well I just had to read it. I have presented "Jackie Honour" as he is known in the colliery areas outside Hartlepool with many awards over the years, usually as Player of the Year but I never realised what he went through to realise his lifetime ambition to become a professional football player. Although this book is obviously about football it is tinged with sadness, rejection and love.
John Riddle has written this book from the heart and I have to admit to one or two tears when I read about the defeated miners walking behind the Lodge banner, behind the colliery band as their wives wept openly in the street. This is a remarkable account of one man's struggle to play the beautiful game.

It's well written and frankly I couldn't put it down. I won't be surprised if it wins some kind of award and if it does I would be pleased to make the presentation. As a Middlesbrough fan I appreciate the ups and downs of the game but what little Brian Honour went through to achieve his ambition is remarkable. His dad from injuries in the pit, he was raised by his widowed mother.

Rejected by Aston Villa as being too small and a roller coaster ride too at Darlington. When big Cyril Knowles arrived he pushed the little guy out into the cold again. This is not just a story about the ups and downs of a footballer, it encompasses history too, dealing with the miners strike, the redundancies at the Lion Brewery in Hartlepool, and many other aspects of life in the north east. John Riddle is an accomplished writer and I am sure this will be a winner for both Brian Honour and John.
A super little book about a super little winger. As a Pools fan for the past few seasons it was interesting to read the life story of one of the legends of the Victoria Ground.
As I read the book it became apparent that this wasn't just about football it was about life in a mining village. I must admit I she a few tears when Brian's dad died and again when his wedding was cancelled due to the miners strike. But one of the defining moments for me was reading about the return to work for the miners having been defeated by the Iron Lady, Mrs Thatcher.
Women weeping as the men went back to the pit, behind the lodge banner and the colliery band playing. Defeated but not disgraced I felt. I must admit I had a few more tears. The author has captured some heart rendering moments and some joyful occasions too. A nice book, well written.
