Annie and Max attend a Valentine's day party given by Sydney Cahill because Max's mother accepted for them. By the end of the party Sydney is dead and the field of suspects is limited to those who attended the party. Like all the Death on Demand mystery novels the pages are filled with references to crime novels and Laura's mental gymnastics. A good read is number 6 in this delightful cozy series with its memorable cast of characters. Hart's writing style is wonderfully paced as always. It does seem that this particular story has far too many references to other mysteries, mystery authors and characters, though.
After awhile, I started glazing over those references as they didn't add to my understanding of the plot or character motivation. In fact, I would say they were distracting. I don't remember quite as many of these references in Ms. Hart's other Death on Demand stories, fortunately.
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I have just started reading the Death on Demand series and enjoy it. Though the titles in the stories are a great twist, they are too abundant and distracting. Same goes for the allusions or metaphors to mysteries and characters. I am reading more, through the suggestions in the book. PLus there is a website from a librarian that has listed many of the books in these mysteries.
The mysteries are very interesting, typical Christie with suspects carefully drawn and motives explained well. As always a page turner. I especially liked the side theme between Agatha and Dorothy L. I am partial to cats. I was a little disappointed in the spelling errors but that is the publisher and not the author. Even in the midst of "murder" Ms. Hart still brings in humor Posey. I would recommend the Death on Demand books to anyone who wants a very pleasant read.
I love all of Carolyn Hart's "Death on Demand" series. I have almost all of them! I'm in the minority here -- I hated this book. Latest to First First to Latest. Walking on My Grave. Her rich brother entrusted her with his estate, and upon her death, his fortune is to be divided.
